The Kilkenny Design Workshops were a government-funded research and development centre of excellence for design established in Ireland in 1963.
Peter Donovan was invited to join the Kilkenny Design Workshops in 1964. He was awarded the California Gold Medal at the RDS Crafts Competition in 1968, and continued designing for Kilkenny throughout his life.
In 2013 the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland held a conference titled "KDW@21C" that sought to investigate the continuing legacy and acknowledge the influence of the Kilkenny Design Workshops on Irish design practice and culture.

The larger 6 beakers all hallmarked London 1861 by John Samuel Hunt. The smaller 6 shot glasses all hallmarked London 1871 by C. F. Hancock & Co.. The largest of the beakers measures 4"(10cm) tall, with a diameter of just under 3.5"(9cm). The largest of the shot glasses measures 2.75"(7cm) tall, with a diameter just under 2"(5cm).
The box measures 4.75"(12.5cm) tall, by 4"(10cm) in diameter.
Engraved with a full coat of arms and motto to the 2 largest beakers. (Order of the Bath shown). Smaller beakers engraved with a simplified family coat of arms. Crests engraved to both sides of the shot glasses, and to the reverse of the beakers. The larger crest is engraved with the motto Amicitia Reddit Honores (Friendship Gives Honour) and would appear to be for the Pringle clan of Scotland. The griffin crest is engraved with the motto Patior, Potior (I suffer, I obtain) and would appear to be for the Peyton family of Ireland.

Hallmarked in London in 1804 by Joseph Preedy, this remarkable pair of Antique Sterling Silver Wine Coolers are richly decorated, featuring a sculptural Bacchanalian frieze depicting the thiasus (the procession which followed Bacchus) and amongst the figures both Bacchus and his drunken foster Father (and tutor) Silenus. The bases are fluted with the underside of the coolers decorated with chased vines and leaves, and the tops decorated with cast grape and vine swags. This incredible pair of coolers are one of a group of 4 known slightly varying designs made by either Joseph Preedy or William Pitts between 1800-1810 (Pitts & Preedy were Partners from 1791-1799), with each example produced featuring the same frieze but with differing borders. Each wine cooler measures 10.5"(27cm) tall, by 9.5"(24cm) in diameter. Together the pair weigh a very impressive 154 troy ounces. The collars are not hallmarked, but are original.
