The origins of the silver wine ewer in the UK can be traced back to the 16th Century, when silver jugs were used alongside basins to wash diners hands with rose water, as was etiquette during this period. As time progressed this practice was forgotten, and the silver jugs were instead used first for water and then for the less commonly drunk wine. During the Victorian period amazingly elaborate examples were produced, and these, along with early examples, are incredibly sought after by collectors and wine lovers alike.
