A term originating in the UK in the 17th Century, a salver is a handleless tray used for serving dishes or glasses. Members of royal households were served their food or drink on a salver after it had been tested for poison, a practice in Spain referred to as ‘Salva’, and the name is derived from this and the latin verb ‘Salvare’ meaning 'to protect'. 17th Century and early 18th Century sterling silver salvers are rare, and fine condition examples are highly sought after. Larger salvers are often used for presentation pieces, such as the Ladies’ Singles Trophy at Wimbledon, which has been presented since 1886.
