Silver mugs and tankards have been produced in England since the 16th century, with the earliest known example hallmarked in 1556. While tankards have lids, mugs do not, and are often smaller in size, but otherwise the mug and tankard are identical in construction and use. Original glass bottom mugs and tankards, early examples, and design lead forms of the 20th century and by collectible makers, are highly sought after.
