First seen in the Medieval period, the porringer was a low bowl with two handles, used originally for holding a wide variety of food. During the 17th and 18th Centuries they were used as an all-purpose receptacle by individual members of the household, and often used for feeding Children as the handles could be easily held. Children were fed a type of porridge, or gruel, during this period, which may have lead to the name ‘Porringer’ being adopted.
